Blood Donation 101
When you donate whole blood with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, your blood stays here, helping local patients. Your blood is split into three products – red cells, plasma and platelets. This means your blood can be used to help three different patients in the local hospitals! The whole process takes an hour or less – and in the end, you walk away saving up to three lives.
When you donate platelets with CBCC, you may also be able to save multiple local lives with just one donation depending on your platelet count. The whole process usually takes about two hours. Platelets are specifically used to stop or prevent bleeding and are frequently needed by cancer patients, transplant patients and cardiac patients.
