Types of Blood Donation
Whole blood donation is the most common type of donation. This is when you donate one pint of your blood. This blood can then be used as a single product, but is usually split into three products: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. This enables you to save up to three lives with one donation. Whole blood has a 42 day shelf-life, but is usually transfused within 7-10 days of donation.
Whole blood donors may donate at any of our donation centers or mobile drives. If you are not sure of your blood type, this is the best type of donation. We will type your blood after your first donation and let you know what it is! Find a location near you today.
O type donors are especially needed for whole blood donation and Double Red Cell donation. Learn more about the process on our Blood Donation 101 page, or check out the Target Your Type page to find out the best type of donation for your blood type.
