{meet} Joe

Matthews, NC

“I get to be with the love of my life...

Joe was on the edge of life and death.  Blood saved his life.  After feeling dizzy off and on, Joe was rushed to a local hospital where doctors discovered stomach ulcers and a cancerous tumor the size of a softball on his pancreas.  Joe was suffering from massive internal bleeding and blood transfusion began immediately.  During a two-day surgery, Joe lost blood as fast as it could be transfused.  Fortunately, the bleeding stopped, but not before he had received 145 units of blood.

“There is no doubt blood saved my life,” said Joe, who was in the hospital for four months before returning to work part-time.  “I realized that [after surgery], not a drop of blood was my own.”

Today Joe is healthy, active and cancer-free. He gives an “extreme thank you” to all local donors like you who donated blood to help save his life.

Joe’s doctors also credit his healthy and active lifestyle in helping him survive the grueling and intense surgery.  He recognizes that the YMCA – a CBCC blood drive partner – played a part in Joe’s fitness before his surgery and during his recovery.  It’s also where he met his wife, Shayla.

CBCC is the primary blood supplier to the region’s patients and hospitals. Every Drop Stays Here. Saving Local Lives.

Thanks to local donors like you.”
